Maryland Pain Specialists now offers a NEW Treament - Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy

PRP is used to treat musculoskeletal injuries. It’s use has exploded with professional athletes looking for the fastest natural ways to get back to competition. Just this year PRP has been used in professional football, baseball and basketball players. PRP has been tested and shown to be effective for hamstring tendonitis, tennis elbow or elbow tendonopathy and plantar fasciitis. PRP has also been shown to be effective for arthritis pain in the hip and knee with promising new data for shoulder and sacroiliac arthritis as well. Historically these conditions have been treated with steroid injections. These may still be appropriate, but multiple steroid injection weaken the tissues over time while PRP can strengthen them.

Maryland Pain Specialists is proud to announce that we are the first group in Maryland to offer the newest treatments for chronic pain.

MPS is the first group in Maryland to offer a new neurostimulation device to relieve pain in patients suffering from chronic intractable pain. The new device is the St. Jude Medical Axium™ Neurostimulator System for dorsal root ganglion (DRG) stimulation. Unlike traditional neurostimulation devices, the Axium system targets the DRG, a spinal structure densely populated with sensory nerves that transmit information to the brain via the spinal cord. This first-of-its-kind device delivers a form of spinal cord stimulation (SCS) that targets specific areas of the body where pain occurs. As a result, DRG stimulation gives our physicians the ability to provide pain relief to patients with neuropathic conditions otherwise not relieved by traditional means. Typically these are people suffering from chronic leg pain associated with complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), including people with continued knee pain after knee replacement.

According to Dr. Block, “DRG stimulation is an exciting new technique that can alleviate pain in many of our patients who have not yet found anything that is effective for them. I’m excited to be able to offer the benefits of spinal stimulation to this new group of suffering patients.”

Long term data from the ACCURATE clinical trial shows that DRG stimulation provides meaningful pain relief in nearly three quarters of patients. Furthermore, patients receiving DRG stimulation achieved better treatment success than patients receiving traditional spinal cord stimulation (SCS). DRG helped 74.2% of patients compared to 53% for SCS. After 12-months, nearly all patients receiving DRG stimulation reported better stimulation targeting in their area of pain than patients receiving traditional SCS (94.5 percent vs. 61.2 percent).
